03 - 4 slices cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese

→ Meats

04 - 4 slices thick-cut bacon

→ Vegetables

05 - 1 ripe avocado, sliced
06 - 1 medium tomato, sliced
07 - 2 leaves romaine or butter lettuce

→ Condiments & Seasoning

08 - Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

# Directions:

01 - Place bacon slices in a skillet over medium heat and cook until crispy, approximately 5-7 minutes. Transfer to paper towels to drain.
02 - Lightly butter one side of each of the four bread slices.
03 - Place two bread slices buttered side down on a work surface. Layer each with one slice of cheese, bacon strips, lettuce, tomato slice, and avocado slices. Season tomato and avocado with salt and pepper. Top with remaining cheese slices and bread slices with buttered side facing upward.
04 - Heat a large nonstick skillet or griddle over medium-low heat. Place assembled sandwiches in the pan and cook for 3-4 minutes per side until golden brown and cheese is fully melted, gently pressing with a spatula during cooking.
05 - Remove sandwiches from skillet and allow to cool for 1-2 minutes. Slice diagonally in half and serve immediately while warm.

# Expert Advice:

01 -
  • It combines all the best parts of a BLT with the gooey satisfaction of melted cheese in every bite.
  • You can make it with ingredients you probably already have, and it comes together in under twenty minutes.
  • The creamy avocado balances the salty bacon and tangy tomato in a way that feels both fresh and comforting.
  • It works for lunch, dinner, or even a late night snack when nothing else sounds right.
02 -
  • Don't skip softening the butter, cold butter tears the bread and leaves uneven patches that won't crisp properly.
  • Keep the heat at medium low or the bread will burn before the cheese has a chance to melt all the way through.
  • Let the sandwich rest after cooking or the avocado and tomato will slip right out when you take your first bite.
03 -
  • Press down gently with your spatula while grilling to help the cheese melt into all the layers without flattening the sandwich too much.
  • If your avocado is a little under ripe, mash it lightly with a fork and spread it on the bread instead of slicing it.
  • Use a cast iron skillet if you have one, it holds heat evenly and gives you the best golden crust.
